Ray Theory

Ray theory, or physical or geometrical optics, is the usual name for the WKBJ ansatz applied to high frequency waves in the frequency domain. The characteristics of the eikonal equation are the rays, which are straight lines if the refractive index is constant. Other partial differential equations are also susceptible to a ray approach, including for example, high-Peclet-number convection diffusion, or (linearised) high Reynolds number flow.
